Tasting Notes: The Monte Maletto Carema Erbaluce di Caluso Vecchie Tonneau has flinty aromas of minerals and a taut, energetic palate of green apple, pear and herbs. Richness and acidity keep the wine in balance, with a brisk, ripe, orchard fruit finish.
Estate History: Monte Maletto winemaker Giano Marco Viano worked as a sommelier in Glasgow and London before coming home to Carema. With only 16 hectares under vine, the Carema DOCG, located an hour north of Turin on the Piedmont border with the Valle d’Aosta, is one of Italy’s smallest. There are only a handful of producers, working steeply terraced vineyards that surround the town of Carema, population 800. This appellation produces Nebbiolo-based reds and unique white wines from the local Erbaluce grape.
