Tasting Notes: The Girolamo Russo Etna Rosso San Lorenzo Piano delle Colombe is from 80+ year old vines of Nerello Mascalese. Less than 1,000 bottles are made of this savory, silky wine. The volcanic energy of the soils come through in the expressive nose, showing woodsy aromas, exotic spices, red cherries, plums, and pipe tobacco. Firm on the palate, this will need some time in the glass to show the full spectrum of flavors held contained in the incredible expression of Etna Rosso.
Estate History: The Girolamo Russo estate was founded in 2005 by Giuseppe Russo, in memory of his late father. Their vineyards are planted 650-780 meters above sea level on the ancient lava flows of Mount Etna in Sicily. Ranging in age from 60-100 years old, they draw their minerals from underground volcanic water pockets. These water pockets also keep the vines hydrated during the intense Sicilian summer. Everything is done by hand, and Giuseppe works the vineyards organically and makes the wines himself. He vinifies each parcel separately, seeking out their individual identities in a series of wines that reflect the diverse character of their terroirs.
