![]() This week we celebrate Barbera, a grape made famous in Piedmont, where it likely originated, in the Barbera d'Alba and Barbera d'Asti DOCG. This northern Italian grape produces wines that range from fresh and light-bodied with low tannins, to dense and richly purple-fruited examples. Alongside Nebbiolo and Dolcetto, it is synonymous with Piedmont but can also be found in several other Italian wine regions, such as Lombardia, Emilia-Romagna, Puglia, Campania and even the island regions of Sicily and Sardinia. In Piedmont, the region where it is the best known, the grape also gives its name to the Barbera del Monferrato DOC and Barbera del Monferrato Superiore DOCG wines along with the Nizza DOCG subzone of Barbera d'Asti.
