Tasting Notes: From the most lauded vineyard site, San Lorenzo, this darkly brooding and elegant wine needs the most time to come around, but when it does, it's sure to make an impression. San Lorenzo is located closest to the sea out of the four vineyards, and the refreshing sea air adds length to the growing season. In turn, the wine is the most Barolo-like of the four, with formidable tannins when young that resolve to show an ocean of herbal, mineral and dark fruit flavors.
Estate History: Chiaramonte Gulfi was established in the 1970s by Raffaele Catania; his son Vito took over the running of the estate in 1995, but today it is run by his sons Matteo and Raffaele. Gulfi is located in the southeast tip of Sicily, in the province of Ragusa, with a goal to elevate Nero d’Avola, Sicily’s workhorse red grape. Vito and his sons focus on four ‘grand cru’ sites near Pachino in the Eloro DOC. These organic vineyards, all located in the Val di Noto, have unique soils and exposures that showcase different expressions of Nero d’Avola.
