Estate History: Pasquale Cenatiempo's wines from the island of Ischia are a perfect example of the beautiful whites coming out of Campania.  The location of this winery has a deep history with the vine, where evidence of winemaking dates to the 8th century BC, when Greeks founded their first western colonies here.  And unlike its neighbor to the south, Capri, that has lost most of its vineyards to touristic interests, the island of Ischia has been able to maintain its strong viticultural heritage. Here, many of the vineyards are situated on slopes of these volcanic hills, which means that wines can retain freshness and acidity despite the warm climate.  The technique of terracing with dry walls made of hand-worked stones made it possible to conquer otherwise inaccessible areas and represent the original backbone of Ischia’s landscape.  There has also been a concerted effort towards conservation of several rare varieties that have adapted to this habitat over the centuries, yielding wines that are quite unique.

Tasting Notes: The Cenatiempo Bianco Superiore is mostly a blend of the rare Biancolella and Forastera grape varieties, two grapes native to Iscia and widely planted on the island.  Biancolella, most often used in blends in Capri and the Amalfi coast, brings aromas of stone fruit and roundness whereas Forastera brings a bright minerality and freshness to the wine.  Harvested by hand, fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperature, with one month of lees ageing prior to bottling for added texture.  Aromas of fresh and bright citrus fruit and peaches meld with notes of wildflowers.  Distinctive and zesty, the whites from this volcanic terroir also show a characteristic 'struck flint' character. Will pair well with lighter dishes, like starters and seafood in general.  We recommend trying it with Spaghetti alle Vongole. -Vanessa, Eataly Vino Los Angeles
