Tasting Notes: The 2022 Sassicaia has a complex and elegant profile, beginning with lifted aromas of wild blackberries, red currants, cedar, and tobacco leaf, with nuances of iron, sage, and rosemary. The palate is medium to full-bodied, structured by vibrant acidity and fine, yet assertive, tannins that frame rich flavors of dark cherry, plum, and subtle minerality. While currently tightly coiled and compact, it is a balanced and fresh wine with a long, polished finish that will require several years of cellaring to fully unwind and show its full potential.
Estate History: The legacy of Tenuta San Guido began in the 1940s when Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, inspired by the great Bordeaux wines, decided to plant Cabernet Sauvignon vines on his wife's family estate in Bolgheri, a region of Tuscany with no commercial winemaking history at the time. The "stony field" (Sassicaia in Italian) terrain was reminiscent of Bordeaux's Graves region, and for decades the wine remained a private family reserve. In the 1970s, with the assistance of the respected enologist Giacomo Tachis, Mario's son Nicolò convinced him to release the 1968 vintage commercially. Its subsequent international acclaim in a 1978 blind tasting of top Cabernet-based wines propelled it to global fame as the original "Super Tuscan" and led to the estate being granted its own unique single-estate DOC appellation, Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC, in 1994.
