Tasting Notes: The 2021 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo stands as a magnificent testament to a truly legendary Piedmontese vintage, showcasing a rare and masterful balance of power, definition, and vibrant energy. The exceptional growing season infuses the glass with a brilliant core of crunchy red cherries, wild raspberries, and crushed rose petals, all underpinned by sophisticated layers of cedar, tobacco, and wet river stone. While Rio Sordo is historically celebrated for its seductive, silky approachability, the remarkable 2021 conditions elevate it with an intense structure, a salivating sapid minerality, and fine-grained, chiseled tannins that ensure phenomenal longevity. It is a sublime expression where the vintage's signature focus and concentration seamlessly marry the Cru's innate elegance, promising a spectacular evolution over the next three decades.
Estate History: Founded in 1958 by the local priest Don Fiorino Marengo, Produttori del Barbaresco is widely considered the world's premier winemaking cooperative. Marengo united nine small, struggling growers to ensure economic survival and protect the identity of the village's unique terroir after the historic cooperative of Domizio Cavazza was shuttered during the war. Today, the cooperative has grown to include over fifty member families controlling more than one hundred hectares of prime Nebbiolo vineyards, including nine legendary single-vineyard crus. By enforcing strict quality controls, pooling only top-tier fruit, and adhering strictly to traditional, large Slavonian oak cask aging, they consistently deliver some of the finest and most reliable wines in Italy.
