Tasting Notes: The Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino 2021 presents a deep, brilliant ruby-red color and an inviting bouquet of small red and black berries, violets, and fresh earth, layered with bay leaf, sage, juniper, and a whisper of licorice. On the palate, it is medium-to-full-bodied and vividly juicy, its ripe fruit carried by a bright spine of acidity and firm, polished tannins that read as elegant rather than austere. Structured yet energetic, the wine reflects the freshness and precision of the 2021 vintage, culminating in a long, linear, and focused finish. Estate History: The history of Casanova di Neri dates back to 1971, when Giovanni Neri, a grain merchant from Montevarchi, purchased Podere Casanova, a 200-hectare farm on the eastern side of Montalcino, drawn to its altitude, exposure, and soil suited to exceptional Sangiovese. He restored and replanted the estate's vineyards, releasing its first Brunello di Montalcino, the now-iconic White Label, in 1978. Following Giovanni's death in 1991, his son Giacomo Neri took over as sole owner, expanding the estate through the acquisition of the Cerretalto and Tenuta Nuova vineyards and sharpening its reputation through meticulous, terroir-driven winemaking. Under Giacomo's direction, Casanova di Neri became one of Montalcino's most celebrated producers, earning Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year for its Tenuta Nuova 2001 — the first Brunello ever to receive the honor — along with numerous perfect scores from international critics. Today, with Giacomo's sons Giovanni and Gianlorenzo carrying the estate into its third generation, Casanova di Neri remains devoted to the family's founding philosophy: crafting Brunellos of elegance, finesse, and remarkable ageing potential that fully express Montalcino's terroir.
